Famouos Cricketers No 92 - Ian Chappell

1971/72 South Africa were due to tour Australia in 1971/72 but with anti-apartheid campaigning at its peak the Australian Cricket Board cancelled the visit. As England had done two years previously the tour was replaced by a series against a Rest of the World XI. During the series Dennis Lillee came of age as an international fast bowler and Bob Massie began his meteoric rise and fall. The season also saw a large number of limited over games, an experiment not repeated for several years. South Australia missed winning the Shield by one point when they failed to beat Victoria on the last day of the season. Chappell had hoped to see Sobers return to the State side, but his unexpected commitment as captain of the Rest of the World XI prevented this. The commitments of the Australia captain saw Cunningham take over the leadership of the State side on three occasions. Chappell led them in the final of the KO competition, but a century from Lawry and a half century from Stackpole brought victory for Victoria. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 140.
