Chappell shared a big partnership with Barry Richards. In the return match in December Chappell declared both his innings and was only prevented from forcing a victory by a stubborn innings lasting nearly two hours from Derek Underwood. His captaincy was in sharp contrast to that of Lawry in the Test series, described by E.M.Wellings in Wisden as “negatively unimaginative”. With Australia 1-0 down Chappell’s century in the Melbourne Test was greeted by a crowd invasion, during which his cap was stolen. He hit twelve fours in an innings that lasted over four hours. In the Adelaide Test Australia went in to bat in their last innings 469 in arrears and it needed a double century stand from Chappell and Stackpole to save the game. Only a victory in the final Test could keep the Ashes in Australia’s possession. The selectors turned to Chappell as captain but foolishly discarded Lawry as a player, despite an average of 40 and no adequate replacement. Chappell put England in to bat and bowled them out for 184 but after a second innings recovery England won by 62 runs, winning the Ashes for the first time since 1956. The early abandonment of the Third Test in Melbourne after three days of rain saw the substitution of a 40 overs a side match which became the first official one-day international. Chappell with 60 was the top scorer for Australia as they won by five wickets. South Australia won the Shield, Chappell missing only one match, when the captaincy was taken over by K.G.Cunningham. The side also reached the semi-finals of the K.O. competition, 98 from Tom Graveney putting Queensland into the final at South Australia’s expense. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 125.
