1969/70 - Australians in Ceylon and India The entire Australian domestic season of 1969/70 was missed as the Australian side toured India between October and December 1969 then moved to South Africa in the New Year. Chappell was appointed vice-captain to Bill Lawry. In a series of warm-up matches in Ceylon Chappell scored 71 retired against the Ceylon Board President’s XI at the Colombo Oval in a one-day match. His grandfather, Victor Richardson, died during the match against West Zone in Poona and the Australian side wore black armbands during the play as a mark of respect. Chappell captained an Australian side for the first time in the match against North Zone in Jullundur, when he scored 164 in just 190 minutes with four sixes and twenty fours.
