The rain that contributed to England’s dominance prevented them winning the series, and in the end they only drew it in a nail-biting last session of the final Test. The Australians won the First Test, when Walters made his only major contribution in England. They went into a sharp decline at Lord’s, bowled out for 78. Chappell was furious with his fellow South Australian Barry Jarman in the Fourth Test, when as stand-in captain he settled for a draw rather than trying to bowl out England with his spinners.
