Faced with a number of players out for revenge for the humiliations he had inflicted upon them in England in 1956, he proved that he could hold his own in Australian conditions by heading the England Test match averages. He took fifteen wickets in the four Tests that he played, he missed the fourth Test at Adelaide through injury. These wickets cost him 21.20 runs apiece and they included figures of five for 107 at Sydney and four for 93 at Melbourne. Repeated batting failures meant that England seldom had enough runs to play with and the absence of J.H.Wardle who had bowled so well in South Africa did not help the cause. In other matches Laker took ten wickets for 101 in the match against South Australia at Adelaide and six for 82 against an Australian XI at Sydney. In all matches he took thirty-eight wickets at 17.23. He scored 107 runs at an average of 10.70 and took one catch. Along with other famous names such as Trevor Bailey and Tom Graveney he was discarded by England after this tour. Although Graveney was to force his way back later in his career, Laker never did.
