In a wet, low-scoring year, Laker took ninety-three wickets in the Championship at the very low average of 13.58. In the four Tests that he played against an outclassed New Zealand team, he took seventeen wickets at an even lower average, 10.17. At Headingley he took eight wickets in the match for 44 runs and in the first New Zealand innings at Lord’s he took four for 13 in twelve overs. His best Championship figures were eight for 46 against Sussex at Hove when he went on to take twelve for 78 in the match. He took ten for 76 against Middlesex at Kennington Oval and seven wickets in an innings against both Gloucestershire and Nottinghamshire at Kennington Oval. In all matches he took 116 wickets at 14.23 figures that earned him sixth place in the national averages. Against Leicestershire at Kennington Oval he hit his first half-century since 1955, an innings of 59. He scored 325 runs in all matches at an average of 14.13 and he took ten catches.
