He played in only one Test against the touring Pakistanis, the first Test at Lord’s in which he took two wickets for 39 runs. After this he was left out in favour, first of Bob Appleyard of Yorkshire and then of Jim McConnon of Glamorgan. Both these bowlers were preferred to Laker for the MCC tour to Australia and New Zealand in the winter of 1954/55. For Surrey he had some devastating performances taking 112 Championship wickets at 14.46 including eleven for 94 against Northamptonshire at Kettering, ten for 92 against Essex at Kennington Oval, ten for 90 against Middlesex at Lord’s and ten for 82 against Lancashire at Kennington Oval. He did even better in the match against MCC at Lord’s taking fifteen for 97, his best match figures to date. As a batsman he hit his second century and the highest score of his career, 113 against Gloucestershire at Kennington Oval when he shared a stand of 198 with Ken Barrington for the eighth wicket, six short of the Surrey record for that wicket. To complete a fine all-round performance he took six for 20 in the second Gloucestershire innings. In all matches he hit 807 runs at an average of 25.29 and he took twenty-nine catches.
