He took sixty wickets in May alone, taking five wickets or more in an innings seven times. He played in two of the Test Matches against South Africa and his performance in the final Test at Kennington Oval could fairly be said to have won that crucial game for England to clinch a 3-1 Series win. He took ten wickets for 119 runs in the match, eight of them being top order batsmen and he also contributed thirteen not out as England stuggled to a four wicket win in a low-scoring game. He had some outstanding figures for Surrey taking ten for 34 against MCC, eleven for 123 against Somerset, twelve for 144 against Worcestershire and ten for 141 against Essex. He scored 624 runs in all matches at an average of 19.50 which included four half-centuries, his best effort being an innings of 89 for Surrey against Northamptonshire at Kennington Oval. He took twenty-two catches. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 127.
