In the national averages he finished in eighth position taking 122 wickets at 19.85 in all matches. He played in one Test against the touring New Zealanders, appearing in the final match at Kennington Oval, a match in which England fielded no less than four spinners. Laker finished with the best figures, 4 for 89, in the match but this was not enough to give England a victory. He improved on his career-best bowling figures in the match against Warwickshire at Kennington Oval when he took eight for 42 in Warwickshire’s second innings. He took twelve wickets in the match against Kent at Kennington Oval in July, a month in which he took forty-three wickets. He scored 548 runs in all matches this summer at an average of 17.12. This included his maiden first-class hundred against Cambridge University at Guildford when, batting at No nine he added 173 for the eighth wicket with Bernard Constable. He took twenty-five catches. In the match against Northamptonshire in May came the first example of a dismissal that was to become very familiar throughout the cricket world over the next decade or so when J.E.Timms was out - caught G.A.R.Lock bowled J.C.Laker.
