Famous Cricketers No 90 - Roy Edwin Marshall
SEASON’S AVERAGES Batting and Fielding M I NO Runs HS Ave 100 50 Ct Other match 1 1 0 2 2 2.00 - - - 1948/49 After his rather inauspicious début, Marshall did not regain a place in the Barbados XI until his major rivals (Atkinson, Carew, Goddard, Walcott and Weekes) were taking part in the West Indian tour of the sub-continent. He made excellent use of his second chance by scoring his maiden first-class century and taking his first wickets in first-class cricket. His first victim was Simpson Guillen who had opened the innings with Andy Ganteaume. He bowled him for 11 with the score at 31. After Trinidad had fallen for 355 on the first day, Marshall and Taylor (168) replied with an entertaining opening partnership of 278, which fell just short of the Barbadian record of 292 established in 1927 by George Challenor and Tim Tarilton against Trinidad at Bridgetown. Lucas then added to the misery of the tourists with a chanceless and magnificent 216 not out as Barbados won by more than an innings. In the return match, Marshall and Lucas (92 & 158) again batted finely but Barbados had to settle for a draw. Derek Sealy (112 & 53), Clarence Skeete (37 & 111) and Rupert Tang Choon (50 & 65) played extremely well for Trinidad, for whom Skeete also took 7 wickets for 203 runs. Marshall, with 2/11 in just under 10 overs, bowled exceptionally well in Trinidad’s second innings. He also held his first catch in first-class cricket when he accepted a chance from Cecil Pouchet off his own bowling. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 2. Jamaica opposed Trinidad in two games while British Guiana visited Barbados for a pair of contests. The Bridgetown matches were dominated by Walcott and Weekes who registered double centuries but they also provided Roy Marshall with an excellent opportunity to enhance his reputation as one of the finest opening batsmen in the region. He scored a truly sparkling 191 in one of the most attractive innings ever played on that ground. He completely overshadowed both Charlie Taylor and Clyde Walcott who were then two of the fastest scoring batsmen in the West Indies. Taylor was unfortunately run out for 35 after an opening stand of 98 and Walcott left at 273/2 after contributing 65 to a partnership of 175. Barbados amassed the huge total of 686/6 declared when Weekes (236 not out), Lucas (59) and Goddard (56 not out) all looked in good form. The Guyanese then surrendered meekly to the bowling of Frank King, Clyde Walcott and C.B. ‘Boogles’ Williams. The second match ended in an exciting draw with only one Guyanese 7
