The majority of these catches were taken by wicket-keepers. As he generally played spinners from the crease, he was stumped only 8 times altogether, i.e. on 0.75% of all of his innings. This is a lower ratio than is the average for aggressive batsmen of Marshall’s type. It is interesting to observe that while he struck his own wicket twice during his first 66 matches, he did not do so at all in his final 536. Marshall also suffered the unusual indignity of being run out twice in the same match (against Lancashire at Bournemouth in August 1971). 65
