He played his first match in January 1946 and his last in September 1972. While he was destined to play only 8 times for Barbados, his native island, he appeared 504 times for Hampshire, his adopted county. For the latter, he registered 30,303 runs, including 60 centuries, at an average of 36.03 per innings. His contribution to the Barbadian cause was 695 runs (ave 57.91). In 35 matches for the West Indies, he made 1,830 runs (ave 35.19). He also represented the Commonwealth on 26 occasions, scoring 1,193 runs (ave 32.24). A brilliant fieldsman, he held 293 catches. His right-arm off-breaks were used very sparingly in his last years with Hampshire. He would certainly have captured more than the 176 wickets which he took in almost 2,000 overs of very steady bowling had arthritis not intervened in the late stages of his career. On five occasions, he claimed five or more wickets in an innings and once, against Yorkshire at Bradford in June 1955, he captured as many as nine in a single game. His most successful effort yielded 6/36 against Surrey at Portsmouth in June 1956. His average of 28.93 runs per wicket was eminently satisfactory. That Roy Marshall should have been allowed many more than four Test matches goes without saying. He could have served either England or the West Indies with great distinction while at his peak. 57
