The highlight of the year for him was a sparkling double-century against Derbyshire at Derby in mid-August when it took a marvellous return catch by Philip Russell to prevent him from surpassing his previous best. In “exuberant form”, he struck 2 sixes and 29 fours on that occasion. At Nottingham in late July he decorated his ebullient 114 not out with 15 fours as the team made almost 400 runs in a single day. Hampshire were lucky to be able to replace Marshall and Jimmy Gray, who had opened the innings so well for so long, with two such great batsmen as Barry Richards and Gordon Greenidge. The county finished ninth in 1972 but, within a year, would rise to the top of the proverbial greasy pole once again. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 585.
