He led with great aplomb but the team was in transition and did well to finish ninth in the county championship. Relieved of his responsibilities as skipper, Marshall batted with much of his old fluency and flair although he was now 41 years old. He added three centuries to his tally and surpassed 50 on seven other occasions. He batted brilliantly against the touring Pakistanis at Portsmouth in May, scoring 122 out of 216 and reaching his century in three hours despite nursing a strained rib muscle. One of his finer efforts came at Swansea in early June when he struck 13 fours in a brisk 97. His unbeaten 103 against Sussex at Hove four weeks later occupied only 135 minutes and, in Wisden’s words, contained “drives square of the wicket and into the covers such as are very rarely seen.” He finished the season with a glorious century at Surrey’s expense. This took him beyond 1,500 runs for the twelfth time in his seventeen years with the county. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 559.
