Roy Marshall improved on his poor showing of 1969 and ended the campaign with almost 1,600 runs at better than 40 per innings. He achieved only two centuries but he surpassed fifty on twelve occasions. He began the season with excellent innings against Oxford University and Middlesex. Against the latter, at Lord’s, he followed his majestic 189 not out in the first innings with a sizzling 74 in 53 minutes that just failed to secure victory for his side. In this match he shared with Danny Livingstone a new record for the county when they added 263 for the fourth wicket. By the end of May, Marshall had scored 688 runs in 9 innings (with one not out) and was averaging 86. He could not sustain such a dizzy pace but he did play some more splendid innings before the summer was over. Against Oxford University, in the very first match, he delivered 16 accurate overs to take 1/7 but did not bowl at all after that. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 534.
