While Barry Richards and Richard Gilliat exceeded 1,000 runs each and averaged more than 40, Marshall himself was restricted to 19 matches and failed for the first time to register a century in an innings or 1,000 runs in a full season. His best effort was 87 against Warwickshire in late June when he shared with Gilliat (223 not out) a fine third wicket partnership of 219.
