But the arrival of this star coincided with Roy Marshall’s gradual descent from the high standards he had previously set. For the first time in his Hampshire career, he failed to register 1,300 runs. His season, in fact, began disastrously as he gathered only four runs from his first three innings. His ten innings in the month of May yielded a paltry 116 runs and he demoted himself to the middle of the batting order to allow Richards and Barry Reed to open the innings. They responded immediately with a fine partnership of 182 against Northamptonshire. Marshall achieved but a single century and reached 50 only eight times in 50 innings. His finest efforts came late in the season when he batted brilliantly against the Rest of the World XI and the touring Australians. He was honoured with a selection for the Rest of the World XI which opposed Kent at Canterbury in August but produced nothing of significance in that match. For the first time in his career, too, Marshall did not bowl a single over all season long. During the course of the campaign he became the first West Indian to appear in 500 first-class matches and the first to exceed 30,000 runs. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 484.
