The latter, who celebrated his 43rd birthday during the season, exceeded 100 wickets for the nineteenth successive summer and the former, now 37, scored almost 1,500 runs. Marshall registered four majestic centuries and surpassed 50 on six other occasions but his average declined noticeably. His highest score was 160 against Northamptonshire at Portsmouth in mid-July when he shared a first-wicket partnership of 233 with Barry Reed, then the second best opening stand in Hampshire’s history. On this occasion Marshall struck one six and 23 fours in 220 minutes of total mastery. Against Surrey at The Oval in May, he struck a blistering 100 out of 176 in 58 overs. In June he showed his class by thumping the touring Indians for 189 runs in two brilliant innings at Southampton. In early July, he scored an exciting 153 out of 210 in 203 minutes against Middlesex at Lord’s. Although the county lacked quality spinners, Marshall was able to bowl only two overs all summer. Hampshire might have fared considerably better had this not been the case. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 455.
