Famous Cricketers No 90 - Roy Edwin Marshall
eleventh in the championship standings. His own personal record was satisfactory, as in 29 games he exceeded 1,800 runs, including three centuries, at an average of more than 36 and scored 50 runs or better on no fewer than 16 occasions. Hampshire’s progress was impeded by the retirement of Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie, the departure of Jimmy Gray and the decline of Danny Livingstone. Among their young bowlers, only Robert Cottam looked consistently dangerous and the usually reliable Peter Sainsbury could capture only 21 wickets (ave: 42.14). Against Nottinghamshire in June, when Marshall scored his first century of the season, Wisden reported that he “played an outstanding innings, curbing his natural scoring pace to meet the situation”. His 110 came out of a total of 209. A few weeks later, a dazzling 92 not out at Hove took Hampshire (125/1) to victory over Sussex in 105 minutes. His highest score was 133 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in July. He also scored a fine century against Kent at Bournemouth in August. Marshall seldom called upon himself as a bowler this summer, but some challenging overs against Essex towards the end of the campaign suggested that he might profitably have made greater use of his own off-breaks had he been physically able to do so.
