Marshall exceeded 1,500 runs again but at a lower average than usual. He played several fine innings but converted only two of them into centuries. His very first innings, which yielded 60 before he was undone by his own impetuosity, was described by Wisden as “an exhilarating display”. In the following match, he raced to his century against Oxford University in 102 minutes, the fastest by any one this season. Hampshire, chasing 185 to win in 135 minutes, claimed the victory with thirteen minutes to spare. Mike Barnard finished the proceedings with a mighty six off Richard Gilliat’s bowling. Marshall’s “remarkable” 81 against Sussex at Portsmouth in late June took only 82 minutes after he had despatched John Snow for three fours and one six in the first over. When he confronted 42
