For a change, he was outscored by Danny Livingstone and Henry Horton and had to be content, for the first time since 1956, with fewer than 1,500 runs. Even so, he played some memorable innings, including centuries before lunch against Derbyshire at Bournemouth in May and Glamorgan at Cardiff in August. His 106 against Derbyshire came in 84 minutes and included 17 boundaries. His magnificent 163 against Glamorgan occupied 217 minutes and featured one six and 23 fours. At Portsmouth in early June, he cracked a glorious 102 in 105 minutes against Glamorgan, hitting one six and 18 fours. One week later, he also put the Oxford University bowlers to the sword at Oxford. His century on this occasion was the fiftieth of his career and he had become the first West Indian to reach this milestone. But Hampshire disappointed their supporters by finishing thirteenth in the competition, the lowest since Marshall’s arrival in 1955. At the end of the season, Roy took part in three matches for Sir Frank Worrell’s West Indian XI against an England XI but without distinguishing himself. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 368.
