Apart from Marshall and Horton, their batsmen could not cope with the wet pitches and they failed to improve on the tenth place standing of 1962. Marshall, however, played in his usual attractive manner, scoring five centuries and heading his county’s averages again. In 30 matches he recorded 1800 runs, including 5 centuries, at an average of 34.61. His highest score was a thunderous 161 not out against Surrey at Southampton in August in a total of 253/6 declared. His splendid 124 at Coventry early in the season included 20 boundaries while the bulk of his teammates were floundering against the bowling of Tom Cartwright and Albert Wright. His 104 against Nottingham at Trent Bridge in early July required only two and a half hours and included 16 boundaries. His brilliant 119 against Kent at Canterbury in early August came in 134 minutes and featured one six and 18 fours. Two weeks later, he struck a belligerent 126 against Northamptonshire in 150 minutes in an innings which contained 6 sixes and 16 fours. In the very last match of the season, Marshall received his worst treatment as a bowler, conceding almost 10 runs an over in an unfortunate spell against an MCC All England XI at Southampton. This was the only time all year that he had been called upon to bowl. In fact he was beginning to suffer from an arthritic condition in the joint of the second finger of his right hand and would bowl only very irregularly for the rest of his career.
