Famous Cricketers No 90 - Roy Edwin Marshall

1962 - in England Hampshire disappointed their supporters by slumping to tenth place in the standings this year after having played so magnificently in 1961. Partly responsible for this decline were the frequent injuries to David White, one of their main fast bowlers, and illness to Roy Marshall who was restricted to 28 matches, including one for the MCC. Even so, Marshall exceeded 2,000 runs once again and was the first to reach that milestone (on August 10). He also received solid support from Gray, Horton, Livingstone and Sainsbury. For the first time in his career, Marshall struck six centuries during the season and surpassed his previous best when he achieved a glorious 228 not out at the expense of the touring Pakistanis. On this occasion, he shared an unbeaten third wicket stand of 267 with Livingstone (101 not out). His 131 in 165 minutes against Middlesex at Lord’s in late May was described by Wisden as “dazzling”. His superb 112 against Warwickshire at Portsmouth in June was made out of 180/4. His brilliant 170 not out against Somerset at Bournemouth in late July included 116 in boundaries, despite the wet outfield. At Cardiff, one week later, he reached his century against Glamorgan in 96 minutes and his 142 at a run-a-minute included 2 sixes and 22 fours. During the course of his fine century against Leicestershire in June, he became the first West Indian to exceed 20,000 runs in first-class cricket. His 42 centuries by the end of the season also constituted another West Indian record. Marshall remained a reliable fieldsman but his bowling, once again, was scarcely required.
