Famous Cricketers No 90 - Roy Edwin Marshall

Bournemouth in early June his “magnificent” 212 against Somerset included 7 sixes and 25 fours. It was the first double-century of his career. At Canterbury, against Kent in early August, he raced to his century in less than two hours, despite the dampness of the pitch. Four weeks later, his dashing 109 against Yorkshire at Bournemouth occupied just 155 minutes and he would certainly have won the match for his side had he not been run out when in full flight. His “superb” 104 against the runners-up, Yorkshire, at Scarborough at the end of the season came in 98 minutes. It included 6 sixes and 10 fours. Altogether, he recorded five centuries and surpassed 50 on no fewer than 20 occasions in 32 matches. At the crease, Marshall received consistent support from Jimmy Gray, Henry Horton, Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie, Danny Livingstone and Peter Sainsbury. Splendid bowling by Derek Shackleton, David White, Sainsbury, Malcolm Heath and Alan Wassell provided the balance that Hampshire had previously lacked. They performed so well, in fact, that Marshall’s off-breaks were scarcely needed at all. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 269.
