Marshall’s contribution was enormous. He registered in excess of 2,600 runs for the first time in his career and averaged over 43 runs per innings. But it was the rapid pace of his scoring that often made the difference between victories and drawn games. When Surrey challenged Hampshire to score 308 for victory in five and a half hours at The Oval in early May, Marshall decided the issue with a brilliant 153, including 22 fours, in 135 minutes.
