He exceeded 2,000 for the third successive season and continued to score his runs at much better than average speed. Against Glamorgan at Swansea in late May he reached his century in 85 minutes, hitting 20 fours in a sparkling 127. His superb 111 against Leicestershire at Bournemouth in mid-June was described by Wisden as “fast and graceful”. He struck five centuries and scored 50 runs or more on 17 occasions. During the course of his 43 in the second innings against the South Africans in mid-June, he became the first West Indian to exceed 15,000 runs in first-class cricket. Marshall (168) and Gray (88) broke their own record for Hampshire when they achieved a first wicket partnership of 249 against Middlesex at Portsmouth in August. They again provided solid starts for the county but the middle order collapsed too often. With the ball, Derek Shackleton performed nobly, as usual, but generally lacked adequate support. Hampshire also suffered from faulty fielding at critical points. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 234.
