Famous Cricketers No 90 - Roy Edwin Marshall
1956/57 - Duke of Norfolk’s XI in Jamaica The Duke of Norfolk led a team of 13 cricketers to Jamaica during February/March 1957. Roy Marshall was easily the most successful batsman in the party, scoring almost 1,000 runs, including three centuries, in the various fixtures. He played in all three first-class matches, registering 273 runs (ave: 45.50) and producing some delightful strokes in two memorable innings at Melbourne Park (97) and Sabina Park (82). The tourists won two of the three first-class matches and remained unbeaten in all ten games. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 129. He enhanced his reputation as one of the most aggressive stroke-players in the country when he hit the fastest century of the season, in only 66 minutes, against Kent at Southampton in early June. This was the fastest hundred struck by a Hampshire batsman since 1927. Two weeks later, he scored a dazzling 107 in 120 minutes against Nottinghamshire in an innings that included one six and 18 fours. Marshall also scored a century before lunch against Glamorgan at Portsmouth and played, in Wisden’s words “two glorious attacking innings against the champions, Surrey”. On this occasion he produced a “spectacular” 56 in a Hampshire first innings that yielded only 120 runs altogether and, in the second, he hit a sizzling 111 out of 153 in 110 minutes with 17 fours. Towards the end of the season, he was selected to represent the South of England against the North as well as the Rest of England against Surrey. In 32 matches, Marshall scored close to 1,900 runs but would have done immeasurably better had he not far too often conceded his wicket when apparently in full spate. This may partly explain why the county slumped from sixth to thirteenth place in the standings. His bowling skills, too, were more or less neglected as he was restricted to 60 overs this summer.
