He exceeded 1,300 runs but could not sustain an average of 30 even though he played several bright and attractive innings. He scored fifty runs or more on eight occasions and added two centuries to his tally. A belligerent 112 against Middlesex at Lord’s in mid-June was made in trying circumstances which saw the collapse of 25 wickets for 371 runs. He also scored an aggressive 133 against Northamptonshire in August. As the conditions generally favoured his style of bowling, Marshall sent down more overs this summer (350.3) than in any other throughout his long career. He was rewarded with 36 wickets at less than 21 runs apiece. On a responsive strip at Portsmouth in June, he achieved the best bowling analysis of his career (6/36) in a winning effort against Surrey. He also captured 6/44 on two other occasions. His fielding, sharp as always, yielded 26 catches, including four in an innings for the first time in his career when he played against Somerset at Bournemouth in late August. Hampshire enjoyed one of their better seasons, finishing sixth overall in the championship, but were disappointed in failing to match their record of 1955. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 98.
