It was not as successful as previous Commonwealth expeditions to the sub-continent, mainly because Sonny Ramadhin and Frank Worrell, two of its key members, had to leave early to represent the West Indies in a Test series against England in the Caribbean. Marshall took part in 17 first-class matches, scoring 761 runs at an average of 36.23 runs per innings. In the absence of sufficient fast bowlers, he often had to swing the new ball at a brisk medium pace and bowled more overs (284) than he could have anticipated. Against India at Bombay in the second ‘Test’, he bowled 30 overs in an innings for the first time in his career. He exceeded this with 33 against India at Madras in January. His 4/56 against Bombay in November was his best bowling analysis up to that time. He finished the tour with 25 wickets (ave: 29.52). In the five unofficial Tests against India, Marshall was one of the more successful batsmen with 310 runs (ave: 44.28). But, surprisingly, of the 17 centuries struck by the tourists, he scored none. His finest effort was 90 against India in the second ‘Test’ at Bombay in December. He also achieved scores of 89 and 88 not out during the tour. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 45.
