But he achieved only limited success for his native colony and was ignored by the selectors even after Alan Rae had announced his retirement from Test cricket. Restricted to a single first-class match against the tourists, Roy never played for the West Indies or for Barbados again. His determination now was to complete his residence qualification so that he could represent Hampshire in the English county cricket championship. He might have fared considerably better had he not been run out for 25 by Clyde Walcott just after he and Conrad Hunte (29) had enjoyed a fairly promising opening stand. As a stock bowler, Marshall delivered 55.4 overs in this match – far more than he had ever done in a single contest before. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 40. Unable as yet to participate in the full county schedule, he played only four first-class games this summer, including one for a Commonwealth XI against Essex. He made a very positive impression in his third appearance for Hampshire when he scored a sparkling 71 against the Australians and claimed 4/69, his best analysis thus far, from his accurate off-breaks. His breezy knock included 5 sixes and 6 fours while his team could muster only 148 all told in their second innings. He was, however, markedly less successful in the other matches.
