He had finished 1899 with a hundred against Thornton’s XI at Scarborough, followed this up a year later with his 134 against the Players on his return from South Africa, now he began 1902 with another hundred. However, undoubtedly the highlights of the season were his 128 against the Australians at Manchester, followed by his obdurate 49 against the old enemy in Jessop's match at the Oval. Jackson's bowling, reinvigorated by helpful early season pitches was resurgent: he returned match figures of 8 for 13 against Lancashire in May; and 9 for 42 against the tourists at Headingley before wickets dried and flattened and his returns came back down to earth.
