Famous Cricketers No 88 - Herbert Wilfred Taylor

Unhappily this year he suffered the loss of his wife Evelyn, by whom he had a son and a daughter. He remarried later on Elizabeth Joanna Taylor and in the following years he served as a Western Province administrator and spent as much time as he could at Newlands on match days passing on his wisdom and batting expertise to young players and was always ready for a chat about the old days. He died there on February 8 1973 and was greatly mourned by all who knew him. Kit Bartlett and Philip Bailey have given their usual help and I am also grateful to Kit for his pertinent comments. Robin Isherwood was instrumental in getting in touch with Tony McCarron who contributed greatly to the family details and also information on the various ships used for the touring teams travel arrangements. Correction to Wisden One major error in the 1913 Wisden needs to be addressed. In the Somerset game at Taunton Wisden shows Taylor as caught by a substitute. This is incorrect as he was caught by H.Chidgey, the wicket-keeper, who shortly afterwards was injured and took no further part in the game. Wisden does not include Chidgey in the team at all, B.D.Hylton-Stewart took his place, B.L.Bisgood being the wicket-keeper. An asterisk (*) after a match heading denotes that Taylor was captain in that match. 5
