Coupled with this the loss of Sandham after a road accident weakened the team even more. That they lost the rubber is history but Taylor once more enhanced his reputation. Only once in ten innings was he dismissed for less than ten and in all innings passed the fifty mark on five occasions. He did not play in the First Test which South Africa won by 28 runs but made 117 in the second encounter which the home side were unlucky not to win again being only sixty behind when time ran out. For Transvaal in the two matches against the tourists he had two fifties and a 46 in three innings. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 168.
