Famous Cricketers No 88 - Herbert Wilfred Taylor
been missed by Thompson with a very difficult caught and bowled chance was 32 not out at stumps on the second day. On the third day his batting was beyond reproach and he never gave a semblance of a chance throughout the rest of the innings. The feature of his batting was his on-side play which was almost perfect. He made his last hundred in 55 minutes and was unbeaten at the finish made out of 384. Transvaal were so demoralized by the thrashing they received having been 56 in front on the first innings that they tamely succumbed in the second innings and were beaten by 125 runs. Taylor played him mainly of the back foot and his footwork and leg side was so good that Barnes’ best delivery which pitched leg-stump and broke away to the off held no fear for him and their duels were the feature of the season. He commenced against the M.C.C. with two unbeaten innings although to be fair Barnes did not play in the match. In the First Test he made 109 out of 182 and in the second 29 and 40. On his home wicket in Durban he scored 91 out of 153 in the first innings and 100 out of 216 for 6 in the second innings being the main reason that the M.C.C. were beaten for the only time in the tour. Back to Johannesburg for the Third Test had 14 and 70 and in the Fourth Test he made 16 and 93 out of 305 for 9 declared. At Port Elizabeth he again scored heavily with 42 and 87. Altogether it will be seen that he made 508 runs at an average of 50.80 and averaged 158.00 for Natal, his final tally being 824 runs with two centuries and five fifties in fourteen innings.
