Famous Cricketers No 87 - J.H.Wardle
1947 Coming into the Yorkshire Championship side in June, Wardle took seventy wickets in the twenty Championship games in which he played at an average of 23.28. He bowled more overs than any other Yorkshire bowler and bowled fifty-five overs in an innings against Nottinghamshire and forty-nine overs against Surrey and Leicestershire. He took five wickets in an innings on four occasions with a season’s best performance of seven for 66 against Middlesex at Headingley. Against Surrey at Bradford he took six wickets for 28 causing Surrey to collapse from 212 for four to 271 all out. He appeared in a representative match for the North against the South at Scarborough at the end of the season where he bowled fifty-two overs as the South totalled 570 for 6 declared. As a batsman he hit a first Championship fifty against Northamptonshire at Northampton hitting six fours and one six. In all matches he scored 582 runs at an average of 18.18 and he took 24 catches.
