In this match he took his 102nd and last Test wicket, that of Asgarali caught by F.S.Trueman in West Indies second innings. In the Championship he took 92 wickets at an average of 18.55. Included in these figures were match analyses of eleven for 70 against Somerset at Headingley and ten for 54 against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham. He took five wickets in an innings seven times in all matches but overall he was not quite as effective as he had been in previous years. His 114 wickets cost him 20.00 each, the first season since 1953 in which his wickets had cost him 20 or more. As a batsman he scored 546 runs at an average of 15.60 including an innings of 64 against the West Indians at Bramall Lane. He took nine catches. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 356.
