In four Test Matches - he was injured and missed the last Test - he took twenty-six wickets at an average of 13.80. In all first-class matches he took no fewer than ninety wickets at 12.25 and in all tour games he took 105 wickets. Bowling left-hander’s off-breaks and googlies he bamboozled the South African batsmen and attempts to attack him were rarely successful. In the Second Test at Cape Town he bowled England to a resounding victory taking twelve wickets for 89 runs including a second innings analysis of seven for 36. At Johannesburg in the Fourth Test he took his hundredth wicket in Test cricket when he clean bowled C.A.R.Duckworth in South Africa’s second innings. In other tour matches he was almost unplayable taking fourteen for 96 against the Orange Free State, ten for 58 against a South African XI and seven for 20 in 5.1 overs against Griqualand West. As a batsman he scored 207 runs at an average of 13.80 and he held eleven catches. 47
