He played in only one Test Match against the Australian tourists, the Second Test at Lord’s. In a wet summer Tony Lock was considered a more destructive left-arm spinner than Wardle and he played in the other four Tests. Nevertheless Wardle continued to be mightily effective for Yorkshire taking 105 wickets in the Championship at the remarkably low average of 15.92. He took five wickets in an innings four times and once, against “the old enemy” Lancashire at Old Trafford, he took ten wickets in the match. On this occasion he took ten for 104 but his efforts just failed to secure victory for his side. He took five for 27 against the Australians at Bradford and, in another Yorkshire match against Scotland at Hull, he captured four wickets for six runs in nineteen overs, fifteen of which were maidens. In the Test at Lord’s he had the misfortune to make a “pair” and he took only one wicket for 43
