He topped the England bowling averages in the Test Series against South Africa in which he took fifteen wickets at 18.20 but, in spite of this, he played in only three of the Tests taking four wickets in an innings in each of them. These Tests included the only Test he ever played in at his home ground of Headingley. Tony Lock, Wardle’s great left-arm rival, took no fewer than 216 wickets during the season and played in the remaining Tests at Old Trafford and Kennington Oval. In the Championship, alone Wardle took 133 wickets at an average of just 14.86 and he took five wickets or more in an innings nine times and ten wickets in a match on one occasion. Against Gloucestershire at Bristol he took six wickets for 6 runs in 9.4 overs as the home side were bowled out for 51 in their first innings. His best analysis was seven for 72 against Worcestershire at Worcester. Once again this season he bowled more overs and more maidens than any other bowler and he took his wickets at the rate of one every 9 overs. As batsman he hit 571 runs at an average of 12.41 and he took seventeen catches. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 273.
