He did not play in the First Test at Brisbane, England opting disastrously for an all pace attack, but he took part in the other four taking ten Australian wickets at an average of 22.90. He made invaluable contributions with the bat as well, scoring 35 in the Second Test at Sydney where his last wicket stand with Brian Statham added 43 to boost England’s first innings score to 154 all out. As England won the match by just 38 runs it can be seen how valuable Wardle’s innings was. In the Third Test at Melbourne he played another useful innings of 38 in England’s second innings of 279 all out. He came into his own as a bowler in the final Test at Sydney where his varied spin dismissed eight Australian batsmen for 130 runs. There is little doubt that had it not been for rain interuptions, Wardle would have bowled England to a fourth victory in this match. In all matches on the tour he took fifty-seven wickets at an average of 20.45 and scored 341 runs at 17.05. He took nine catches. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 255.
