He played in two Test Matches - the two England won - but took only four wickets in them at a cost of 46.75 each. But he did make vital contributions as a batsman with stands of 69 and 105 with Len Hutton in the Third and Fifth Tests, Wardle’s scores being 38 and 66. He had an effective 12.3 over spell in the Georgetown Test in which he took three West Indies wickets for 24 runs and he took six wickets for 77 in the provincial match against British Guiana. He played in only five matches altogether with Tony Lock being the favoured left-arm spinner who played in all the Tests although Wardle’s average for both the Tests and the tour was better than Lock’s was.
