Famous Cricketers No 87 - J.H.Wardle
other bowler in the country and his number of maiden overs, (810), exceeded the second highest number by no fewer than 296. He took 158 Championship wickets at an average of 17.13 and, altogether, 177 wickets in the season at 19.54. He took five wickets or more in an innings eighteen times and ten or more in a match on three occasions. He seldom gave away even two runs an over during these performances. A few are worthy of mention. He took five for 72 off 56.5 overs against Derbyshire at Chesterfield, five for 49 off 41 overs against Gloucestershire at Harrogate, match figures of ten for 118 off 85.5 overs against Kent at Headingley, five for 40 off 37 overs against Glamorgan at Hull, five for 37 off 37 overs against Warwickshire at Bradford, match figures of eleven for 98 off 60.3 overs against Kent at Canterbury and seven for 49 off 35.3 overs against Middlesex at Bramall Lane. He clearly did not like giving runs away! As a batsman he scored 683 runs in the season at an average of 17.51 which included a fifty against Kent at Headingley to go with the ten wickets he took in that match. He held twenty catches. Despite taking more wickets than any other bowler this season he was not selected to play in any of the Test Matches against the Indian touring team. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 151.
