He lost his place in the last three Tests. For Yorkshire he took ninety-nine Championship wickets at 19.27 being second in the wicket-taking list to Bob Appleyard who took a remarkable 169 wickets. Wisden commented that Wardle had not always fully exploited helpful conditions. He bowled with effect against Glamorgan at Headingley taking eleven wickets in the match for only 58 runs and he had a remarkable spell against Gloucestershire at Bristol bowling twenty-three overs to take six wickets for 18 runs. He took six for 23 against Somerset at Bramall Lane. As a batsman he made the highest score of his career, 79, against “the old enemy” Lancashire at Old Trafford, scoring the runs in eighty minutes with six sixes and seven fours.
