He bowled 1321.4 overs, 328 more than any other bowler for the County and headed the bowling averages with 144 wickets at an average of 15.84. Only Roy Tattersall, with 193, bettered Wardle’s aggregate of 174 wickets in the season but Wardle bowled 224 more overs than the Lancashire spinner. Sadly he failed in the one Test match he appeared in against West Indies at Lord’s when he only managed to take two wickets for 104 in the match despite getting J.B.Stollmeyer lbw with his first delivery in Test cricket in England. It was not enough to earn him a second chance in the Test series. For Yorkshire he took five wickets in an innings fourteen times and ten wickets in a match once. These ten wickets were taken against Middlesex at Lord’s where his second innings figures of eight for 26 were the best of his career to date. He was always economical and some of his more miserly performances should be noted. He bowled 44.4 overs in taking four for 57 against Essex at Colchester; 68 overs in the match to take seven for 87 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge; 25 overs to take six for 25 against Surrey at Kennington Oval; and 24 overs to take six for 12 against Gloucestershire at Hull. In this match his first fourteen overs contained thirteen maidens. His batting brought him 733 runs at an average of 18.79 with half centuries against Gloucestershire and Somerset and he took twenty-four catches. Overall he could be considered unfortunate not to gain selection for the MCC team to tour Australia and New Zealand in the winter of 1950/51. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 84.
