Wardle’s contribution to their success was to take seventy-nine Championship wickets at an average of 20.62. He missed a number of matches between 27th May and July 9th when Arthur Mason was chosen as the left-arm spinner but once he got his place back he had some notable triumphs including twelve wickets for 122 against Surrey at Kennington Oval, eleven for 176 against the New Zealanders at Bramall Lane and eleven for 123 against Hampshire at Hull. He also wrapped up the vital win at Newport against Glamorgan at the end of the season taking five for 15 as the Welsh team were bowled out for 69 in their second innings. He achieved his hundred wickets for the season at the Scarborough Festival, taking, altogether, 103 wickets at 22.65. As a batsman he contributed 412 runs at an average of 17.16 including fifties against Worcestershire at Bramall Lane and Leicestershire at Leicester.
