He did not have a brilliant tour with Wisden commenting that he did not settle down to the strange conditions, including the matting wickets. He made his Test debut in the Second Test at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad where he appears to have been under-used, coming on as the seventh bowler tried and bowling no more than three overs for nine runs whilst the other spinners, Laker, Howorth and Ikin bowled eighty-six overs between them. As Wardle batted at number ten one can only conclude that he was included reluctantly to make up the numbers. In other tour games he took six wickets at 72.00 each dismissing Test batsmen Ken Trestrail and Gerry Gomez amongst his other victims. He scored 77 runs in eight innings at an average of 11.00 and he took two catches. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 26.
