The innings contained 20 fours and lasted seven and three quarters of an hour. His aggregate of 554 was just eight short of the record by an English player against Australia in a home series set by Denis Compton in 1948. Although Edrich had a good season finishing fourth in the first-class averages he was the only player to score a century for Surrey in the Championship where they finished a disappointing fifteenth. In fact, he scored three, the one against Leicestershire at The Oval lasting four hours to force a draw. John Edrich was given a benefit in this year which raised £10,551.
