He expected to be the reserve batsman but displaced Milburn who had a very bad start to the tour. In a good Test match series, won by England, he scored a century at Bridgetown and 96 at Kingston ending with a tour average of 46.18. His 146 at Bridgetown showed him in his anchor role, the innings lasting 144 overs for seven hours fifty minutes. Wisden reported “His start was horrible but he schooled himself to play straighter and closer to his legs and his Test aggregate was exceeded only by those of Cowdrey and Boycott.” Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 294.
