Wisden quoted “He was carried through by his splendid determination and temperament and invariably sold his wicket dearly. Seldom can a batsman have played and missed so often, have so threatened to get out and yet scored so well in Australia”. In the Second Test after Barber and Boycott had opened with 98 for the first wicket, Edrich cemented the innings over a period of five hours. At Sydney he scored a second successive century over four and a quarter hours. In the other matches he maintained his form scoring a century and a fifty in the match against Queensland, his 133 containing 3 sixes and 13 fours. Travelling on to New Zealand John Edrich was below par in the first two Test matches. After the Third Test match started he was taken ill with appendicitis and took no further part in the match or the tour. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 219.
