In the Test match against New Zealand at Headingley, he made his highest score in first-class cricket with 310 not out. In an innings which lasted just eight minutes short of nine hours he hit 5 sixes and 52 fours. He gave only two difficult chances to the slips on 40 and 287. For five hours he was partnered by Ken Barrington as they added 369. During the period from June 10 to July 11 he scored 1,311 runs whilst being dismissed only six times to average 218.50. This included nine consecutive innings of over 50, and a double century against Gloucestershire at Bristol which contained 6 sixes and 21 fours. On July 14 he then scored 71 against Middlesex in the Gillette Cup. In the Test match against South Africa at Lord’s he was struck on the head by a bouncer from Peter Pollock and the subsequent injury prevented him from batting any further in the second innings. Surrey finished eighth in the Championship.
